Are you unable to initiate your test? On the Speedtest.net front page, you should see a map of the world with a Begin Test button. If you're unable to see either of these, here are some possible causes and ways to address them.
Adobe Flash Compatibility
We use currently use Adobe Flash to display the map and test your connection. If you're experiencing display issues, try the following:
- Ensure that any Flash-blockers in your web browser are turned off, then refresh the page
- Verify you have the most recent version of Adobe Flash installed
- Use a Flash- and JavaScript-friendly web browser such as Google Chrome; Internet Explorer and Firefox also work, but Safari will require some configuration.
If you're using Internet Explorer, have a current version of Flash, yet you're still experiencing display issues, you may need to confirm ActiveX (which Adobe uses to run Flash in IE) is working. Here's how to do this:
- Go into your Tools menu (using the gears icon in Internet Explorer 9 and 10).
- Select Internet Options.
- This will show a window with the settings spread across several different tabs. Click on the Security tab.
- Click on the Internet icon on the far left (which looks like a globe), and then click the Custom Level... button below to change the permissions.
- Scroll down to the Active X Controls and Plugins group of options.
- For Allow ActiveX Filtering, make sure that Disabled is selected.
Configuration or Loading Errors
If you're seeing Configuration Load Error or the display is stuck at 100% Loading, it could be that your connection had a brief issue and downloaded a corrupted version of our configuration file in error. Unfortunately, it then cached that file and has yet to refresh it with a working version. Should this occur, try the following:
- Clear your web browser's cache - This will delete the corrupted file and force your browser to download a new copy. Here's how you can do so on Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox.
- Experiment with a different browser - If you're using Internet Explorer, does Speedtest.net work in Google Chrome, or vice versa? Checking this will help you determine if it's a specific browser-based issue.
These are the most common sources of display issues, but if you've followed our recommendations and are still experiencing issues, you may want to test your connection's line quality. Our Pingtest.net tool will diagnose issues such as packet loss (data is sent but never arrives) or excessive inconsistency in your connection. If Pingtest.net gives your connection a poor grade, we suggest contacting your ISP to further troubleshoot your connection.
